3 Knives Every Kitchen Needs

 

All kitchen knives have their own special purpose, but for some people, it can feel overwhelming to acquire and maintain a whole block’s worth of knives for everyday use. Fortunately, there are only three you really need.

 

1. Chef’s Knife or Santoku Knife

You might balk at interchanging a chef’s knife and a Santoku… and, to be fair, you might want to have one of each if you really get down and dirty in the kitchen.  But really, both can used for many of the same tasks. The biggest difference is the edge. The Santoku is thinner, so it isn’t the best choice for heavy hacking – through a butternut squash, for example.

This knife will be your biggest investment, so you want to love it. In general, it’s all about personal preference, and you want to think about the knife as an extension of your hand. Are you comfortable holding it? Does the weight feel right? You and this knife will be spending a lot of time together, so you want to start off on the right foot. Or hand. Lol.

2. Paring Knife

The paring knife is just a little guy, but a true MVP of the kitchen. They sort of look like miniature chef’s knives, but their size and weight make them a completely different tool. Think precision work, like peeling apples and deveining shrimp.  Absolutely worth it to invest in a good paring knife.

3. Serrated Utility Knife

This hybrid knife can take the place of your bread knife, although it’s never wrong to have a larger serrated knife for big loaves of bread.  In addition to tackling most reasonably sized baguettes, a serrated utility knife can do things an ordinary knife with a smooth blade cannot. Tomatoes, sandwiches, delicate fruit and the like will all succumb to your new favorite serrated utility knife.
