6 Reasons to Celebrate February
February can be tough. We’ve more than rounded the holiday season bend, yet spring (never mind summer) seems so very far off. But the shortest month of the year also has lots of special holidays, events and themes to get excited about. Here are some of the best.
The Super Bowl
As New Englanders, we had to start with this. Once again, we’re in it to win it… under Belichick alone, the Patriots have won five Super Bowl championships. Here’s to number 6.

National Wear Red Day
As part of Heart Health Month, National Wear Red Day is this Friday, February 2nd. By wearing red, you can help to increase awareness of heart disease. Share a photo of you and your friends in your best red gear on social media with the hashtag #theheartfoundation.

Ice Cream for Breakfast Day
After you’ve donned your red, turn the tables on dessert and have it for breakfast instead! Ice Cream For Breakfast Day is officially celebrated on the first Saturday of February, and according to Wikipedia, the holiday is often explained very simply: 1. Eat ice cream, 2. For breakfast. Fun, but not sure about the healthy heart reinforcement… guess having all that sugar early in the day gives us the chance to work it off!
Black History Month
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history.
To commemorate Black History Month on Cape Cod, there are several events to explore. The Zion Union Heritage Museum in Hyannis will hold events each weekend in February, including a soul food dinner and entertainment by the “Heart and Soul” group at the Barnstable Senior Center on February 20th. Cape Cod Community College will host a variety of activities this month, including a poetry slam series, an African dance and drum performance, and gospel concerts.

In 2018, Mardi Gras is celebrated on February 13th. Also called Fat Tuesday, it refers to events of the Carnival celebrations which culminate the day before Ash Wednesday. And while New Orleans is the place to be, why not celebrate remotely with a little Cajun mixed into the meal rotation?
